He got employed on October 1, 2020, amidst covid-19. He was among the ‘lucky’ few who got different jobs while the rest of us were trusting God for just that month’s salary. The working hours — as defined on the contract; 8:30 -5:00 pm – were very attractive bearing in mind he was leaving a 7:00 am to 6:00 pm workplace. He had plans to go back to school and he quickly enrolled for a course.
It was not until he reported that he discovered he had fallen for the devil’s bait. He discovered that the Job description that did not even have the usual clause of; any other duties as may be allocated was never to be followed. Daily duties were allocated by the supervisor who cared less about motivation. The employer was a group of companies and he was employed to only handle one company. He discovered that he was the group’s accountant, which featured nowhere in his contract, JD, or even title. You know, a title at least comforts you.
Of the leadership offered by his supervisor, he continually used very hurtful words, that a man is not permitted to use on anyone, leave alone another man who also has an ego. ‘My wife cannot do such mistakes. Is your brain made of matter of porridge? You only appear in this company to fulfill righteousness and sit all day long (this is bearing in mind that he now works 6 am-7 pm) etc. You see, in giving feedback, we are called to stick to the subject matter. One may do a foolish thing, but do not attack them; help them to identify the mistake, not attack their ego.
He is very desirous of leaving. He is actively looking, as he is very sure that his contribution to the company is not for granted. The long hours he works are to cover the extra work no one seems to notice. I asked him then, why he considered his organization toxic yet the main pain was from his supervisor. To this, he responded, that as long as the rest of the organization and management sees his struggle and does nothing, it is because they have approved of it.
So why not leave immediately? He has responsibilities at home. Being the firstborn; the family members look to him for their daily bread. He also has his fees to pay, and an upcoming marriage to save for, and he thinks that he will lose it if he quits before getting another job.
I am praying for him and helping him look around. I invited him to consider the words of this song:
… Almighty, infinite Father
Faithfully loving Your own
Here in our weakness, You find us
Falling before Your throne
Oh, we’re falling before Your throne…
You are the One that we praise
You are the One we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
Oh, our hearts always hunger for
I invite the readers of this blog who may be in the same predicament. The Lord Jesus gives healing and grace that our hearts always hunger for. This gentleman needs healing. He needs grace (favor undeserved) that only Christ, the son of God can offer. The good thing is, He acknowledges his need for a Savior. Therefore, Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart Psa. 37:4
