Not for any man, but the Lord’s!

Dear sisters in the Lord, allow me to speak for us, and in that case for anyone who propagates the same song as I do; sexual purity. It is something that every Tom, Dick and Harry together with every Agnes, Jane and Charity fight with. We have watched movies and soap operas and hoped that our time would come tomorrow. I mean we all will not mind being cuddled and caressed and whatever else given an opportunity, by the Lord! It is something that has crossed our minds at one point in life, yet we are supposed, as believers to say no to ourselves and to put to death the lustful desires of the flesh. I define sexual purity as a war against the flesh desires to say yes before the mind, heart and in togetherness of a congregation say yes!
One would wonder why we need go through the fight while we have all it takes to do what we want. We have freedom, live in a free nation, we have boyfriends and friends that not only do these things but also approve of them. At one point in campus a lady confronted me with the scary question, ‘do you think that you will get a virgin man? All men have wasted away. Do it since you won’t find any.’ I was almost taken back by the question and I thought to myself, by the way, what if?
Well, for anyone out there struggling with this question, my response is this; we do not keep pure for any man or woman, but for the Lord. In her book, ”Passion and Purity, learning to bring your love life under Christ’s control” Elizabeth Elliot notes that waiting on God requires the willingness to bear uncertainty, to carry within oneself the unanswered question, lifting the heart to God whenever it intrudes upon ones thoughts. It is for Him to determine by His foreknowledge who we will marry, whether primary or secondary virgins. We are called to honor God with our bodies irrespective of what happens… for the Joy set before us. And God is faithful, and faithful to those who are faithful.
Our responsibility then is to make a daily commitment of purity; a daily putting to death whatever belongs to the earthly nature and to rid ourselves of impurity. It is to be open with our spouses and to address things that will turn us on and to shun them. It is to patiently walk with them, not blaming them but helping them (the Bible calls us helpers remember). But in all, my purity is not for any man, but the Lord’s…who bought me at a price; His life! My body is His temple (1 Cor. 6) and I will dare not defile His temple with immoral thoughts, sex or whatever makes His temple impure. I am His, and I will remain pure only for His Glory!
